Synopsis: This modern day sci-fi movie is set in the year 2022. While watching the World Cup, viewers witnesses a team of soldiers from the future warn the world of an imminent alien attack in 2051. Veteran Dan Forester is recruited to fight in the war shortly after. His tour of duty will last seven days and Dan and his team will be “jumplinked” to the year 2048. The year 2048 marks the first sighting of the “Whitespike’ aliens. Their mission is simple: kill the Whitespikes and save the world. Upon their arrival in 2048, Dan and his team quickly locate the origin of the Whitespikes. Out of all the male Whitespikes, there is one female Whitespike that is the source of all the trouble. In order to wipe out the Whitespikes, Dan and his team must come up with a toxin that kills the entire Whitespike population. However, if they cannot extinguish the source of the problem, all of their efforts will have been for nothing.

Thoughts: I normally don’t like post-apocalyptic movies, but I thought this movie was very entertaining. If you like the show Stranger Things, this movie is for you! The Whitespike aliens reminded me of the demogorgons in Stranger Things. I loved the relationship between Chris Pratt’s character and his daughter and how their relationship was central to the story. After seeing the show Parks and Rec where Pratt plays a goofy Andy Dwyer, it was refreshing to see Chris in a more dramatic, action-packed role. If you liked him in this film, you will like him in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films as well. One grievance I had was the seemingly obligatory Chris Pratt shirtless scene. This sadly reminded me of how Hollywood objectifies both men and women and utilizes these types of scenes to sell tickets. Was this a clever marketing technique? Yes. Did I still enjoy the scene? Yes. Yes I did.

Fun Fact: Snyder High School Theatre Department alumnus Patrick Malone (back middle) was in this film! Go listen to his interview on The Relative Truth podcast here on Spotify or listen to the episode below!
